Characteristics

The railway transport is adequate for the transport of aggregated low cost goods and large quantities such as agricultural products, oil byproducts, iron ore, metallurgic products, fertilizers, and others. This modal is not as agile as the roadway in the accessing of the cargo, as these have to be taken to the railroad terminal for embarking.

Advantages

• Adequate for long distances and large quantities of cargo;
• Low transport cost;
• Low infra-structure cost.

Disadvantages

• Difference in the width of the tracks;
• Less flexibility on the route;
• Larger necessity of transshipment;
• Long and irregular trip duration;
• High exposure to thefts.
