Characteristics

Road Transport in South America is prevailed by the Covenant on International Road Transport – signed by Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay and Peru in Santiago of Chile, 1989. This covenant regulates the rights and obligations on regular traffic of trucks on journeys between the consignee countries. In Brazil, some roads still show poor conservation state, which increases the costs of vehicles maintenance. Furthermore, the fleet is old and subject to cargo theft.

Advantages

  • Adequate for short and medium distances;
  • Simplicity on attending the demands and agility on access to the cargos;
  • Little handling of cargo and little demand on packaging:
  • Customs clearance can be done by the transport company itself;
  • Operates in a complementary way to the other modals making inter-modality and multimodality possible;
  • Allows door-to-door sales.

Types of Vehicles

  • Trucks: rigid vehicles that have open body, in the shape of a cage, platform, tank or closed (trunks), being that these last ones can be equipped with
    refrigeration machinery for the transport of refrigerated or frozen products.
  • Wagon Trucks: articulated vehicles, with units of traction and of cargo in separate modules. More versatile than trucks, these can leave the semi-tow to be loaded and return for it later, it allows the transporter to make a larger number of trips.
  • Car Carrier Trucks: specific for the transport of automobiles;
    Boogies/Trailers/Chassis/Platforms: vehicles fitted for the transport of containers, generally of 20’ and 40’.
  • Tri-trucks: vehicles similar to wagon trucks, made up of mechanical horses, semi-tows and tows; that is, it is composed of three parts, which allows up to two 20’ containers to be carried. These cannot transit on every road due to its total gross weight (around 70 tons).
