Multimodal

The operation of Multimodal Transport is performed under a single contract of transport; it uses two or more modals of transport, from the origin to the final destination. This operation is carried out under the responsibility of a single Multimodal Transport Operator (MTO). The MTO is the person legally contracted as the main operator, to execute the multimodal transport from the origin to the destination by his/her own means or third party services. The MTO does not necessarily have to be a transporter, but he/she takes full responsibility for the execution of the multimodal transport contract, for losses resulting from misplacements, damages or harms done to the cargo under his/her custody, as well as those resulting from delivery delays, when a delivery date is agreed upon.

Multimodal Transport of Cargos includes, besides the transport in itself, pick up services, consolidation, movement and storage of cargo, deconsolidation, and delivery, in short, all of the essential stages for a complete execution of the task. The performance of multimodal transport is an operation widely used in the flow of goods and it can result in reduction of cost and time of the export operation. It is important to mention that in reality there is still not a MTO figure in Brazil, as the Knowledge of Multimodal Transport is under study and in process of elaboration. However, the use of different modals for a cargo is a constant mode and used under the regime of Intermodal Transport. Every part of the operation is done by a type of transport and shippers contract a different transporter for each part.
